Most people in the DMV know Capital One Arena.
Far fewer have made it down to Congress Heights to catch a game at CareFirst Arena.
That’s a mistake.
Just steps from the Congress Heights Metro station in Southeast DC, CareFirst Arena has quietly become one of the most interesting places to watch professional sports in the region. Unlike the larger venues downtown, there really isn’t a bad seat in the house. With a capacity of about 4,200, you’re close enough to hear the action, feel the crowd, and actually see what’s happening without watching half the game on the jumbotron.
This summer, the arena’s calendar is anchored by the Washington Mystics, who return home for a stretch of games that should bring some of the WNBA’s biggest names through Southeast DC.
Upcoming Mystics Home Games
If you’ve been thinking about checking out a Mystics game, June and July offer plenty of opportunities:
- June 8 — Indiana Fever
- June 12 — Toronto Tempo
- June 24 — Minnesota Lynx
- June 28 — Portland Fire
- July 2 — Atlanta Dream
- July 6 — Golden State Valkyries
- July 12 — Seattle Storm
- July 22 — Las Vegas Aces
- July 28 — Connecticut Sun
Several of the June matchups are part of the Commissioner’s Cup, giving fans a little extra reason to pay attention beyond the regular season standings.
One of DC’s Most Underrated Sports Experiences
What makes CareFirst Arena different isn’t just the basketball.
It’s the setting.
For years, many Washington sports fans had little reason to venture beyond downtown for major sporting events. Today, the arena sits at the center of the continuing redevelopment of the St. Elizabeths East campus and has become an important gathering place for the community while hosting everything from professional basketball to concerts and special events.
And unlike trying to navigate downtown traffic and expensive parking garages, you can simply hop on Metro and walk a few minutes from the Congress Heights station to the arena.
Why You Should Go
Whether you’re a longtime Mystics fan, someone who wants to support women’s sports, or simply looking for something different to do this summer, CareFirst Arena offers one of the most unique live sports experiences in the DMV.
You’ll spend less time fighting traffic, sit closer to the action, and probably wonder why you didn’t make the trip to Congress Heights sooner.
