The Grammy award winning Hip-Hop trio comprised of Mariana Viera, Ishmael Butler and Craig Irvin, also known as “Ladybug Mecca”, “Butterfly”, and “Doodlebug”, made their return to the DMV performing at The Birchmere.
Digable Planets brought their reunion tour to shut down a “Souled Out” crowd, showcasing the greatest hits from their 2 studio recorded albums, “ Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space)” and “Blowout Comb”. The group, pinned to the alternative hip hop genre, reunited to tour in 2016, after an 11 year hiatus. Their fusion of jazz and hip hop solidified their place in music history as well as their cult like following.
Although each of the members of DP went on to develop and continue to work on their solo careers, that hasn’t hindered the groups progress since reuniting.
During their performance at the Birchmere, they were backed by an absolutely sensational and funkdified band that spent some time drifting off into the core of several jazz samples featured in DP classics. Each member had a feature solo during the show.
A scan of the crowd revealed a very eclectic mix of “fanatics” ranging from 70’s babies to millennials, hippies to professionals, and everything in between and outside. Ladybug, Butterfly and Doodlebug gave the crowd high energy, keeping it cool at the same time.
All of the members shouted out their ties to the DMV area throughout the show. It was a homecoming of sorts for each of the trio, with the strongest tie in Ladybug, a native of Sliver Spring, MD.
Enough of the words, see for yourself.
