The Lionel Lyles Quintet took the stage at Mr. Henry’s on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC on Friday, October 19, 2018. The lineup for the LLQ this night included Lionel Lyles on Tenor and Soprano Sax, Michael “Fitz” Fitzhugh on Trumpet, Hope Udobi on Piano, Mikel Combs on Bass, and Jaron Davis on Drums.

The Lionel Lyles Quintet has released two albums. Their debut album The Nightlife: The September Sessions was released in 2006 and their second album At the Precipice was released in 2014. Lyles’ is the 2016 Washington City Paper Best of D.C. Readers Choice winner for Best Performance Artist and Editors Choice for Best New Jazz Musician.

The band is no stranger to Mr. Henry’s. They’ve played their multiple times and you can usually find Lyles their on Wednesday night. Mr. Henry’s is home to a Wednesday night jazz jam that some call the best jazz jam in Washington, D.C. and the restaurant/bar/music venue host a different jazz musician or band every Friday night.

This Friday night, the LLQ played to a nearly full room. The band played a mix of original tunes like “Quiet Thoroughfare” by Mark Prince and popular jazz standards like “Moanin” by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. The band played for over two hours with a brief break between sets.

ABOUT

Ever since I borrowed a camera from a friend of mine eight years ago, I have loved sharing what I see through the lens of my camera with the world. There is nothing better than making somebody feel like they were right there with you. A brief moment in time, by way of photography, can say so much. I hope that these brief moments in time point people in the direction of someplace, something, or someone that they may not be aware of, and that they are curious enough to go see for themselves.
