Favorite Concert & Event Photos Of 2012

January 7, 2013 By Anthony Washington

2012 went by so fast. 2013 is here and I am excited about the many opportunities that are coming about for myself and MetroMontage.com. Before we move forward, lets take a look back of some of my favorite photos from some of the concerts and events that I covered in 2012.

Machine Gun Kelly

machine-gun-kelly-5924.jpg

In 2012, Machine Gun Kelly performed more than 300 shows. This photo is from his performance on Tech N9ne’s Hostile Takeover Tour at the Baltimore Soundstage on Tuesday, June 19, 2012. Mr. Laced Up brought his normal high energy and constantly moving set to a sold out crowd. This photo looks like an album cover to me. Love it. More photos from that night can be found here.

Sean Mackin of Yellowcard

yellowcard-7273.jpg

Sean Mackin brings so much energy and passion to the stage when he performs. This photo was taken during Yellowcard’s sold-out performance at Rams Head Live on Thursday, November 15, 2012. Besides his amazing passion for music, Sean is also a cancer survivor. You can learn more about Sean via an interview I did with him back in November by clicking here.

USA vs. the World Men Distance Relay

penn-relays-2860.jpg

From time to time, people ask me what concert or event do I look forward to photographing the most. I always respond by saying the Penn Relays. There is nothing like photographing the Penn Relays. The best track & field athletes from high school to Olympians make their way to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia to compete each year. There is nothing like it in the world. The stadium is electric for three days straight.

The above photo was taken during the USA vs. The World Men Distance Relay on Saturday, April 28, 2012 in Philadelphia, PA. Leo Manzano of Team USA Blue ran an amazing race. He caught and passed Bernard Lagat of Team USA Red on the back stretch to win the race. Such determination.

Yo Gotti

yo-gotti-road-to-riches-tour-3457.jpg

In hip hop, it is very important that an MC owns the stage when he or she steps on it. It is all about showing confidence a.k.a swagger. This is one of my favorite photos because of that reason. Yo Gotti owned the stage during his performance at the Baltimore Soundstage on Sunday, May 14, 2012 in Baltimore, MD.

WAMU’s Bluegrass Country’s Live At 45

the-gibson-brothers-6201.jpg

WAMU’s Bluegrass Country celebrated 45 years of programming with a live concert at the George Washington University Lisner Auditorium on Nov. 2, 2012. On the bill for the night were The Gibson Brothers and The Del McCoury Band. This photo includes both bands jamming together at the end of the performance in traditional bluegrass fashion.

Squonk Opera GO Roadshow

squonk-opera-7691.jpg

Squonk Opera is not your traditional opera company. If opera had an alternative genre category, Squonk Opera would be in it. This photo, of two of the cast members of the “GO Roadshow” performing on a 34-foot long retrofitted monster truck, is a prime example of how Squonk Opera performs and creates art in their own unique way.

Trayvon Martin Rally- Baltimore

trayvon-martin-march-baltimore-9174.jpg

Thousands of people took to the streets of Baltimore city on Monday, March 26, 2012 to rally in support of Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old who was unarmed when he was shot and killed on Feb. 26 by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman. This photo was taken after the rally made it to its final destination, Baltimore’s City Hall. Reverend C.D. Witherspoon and others took to the steps of City Hall to address the crowd.

MSP Polar Bear Plunge

msp-polar-bear-plunge-IMG6942.jpg

The MSP Polar Bear Plunge is an annual event that raises money for Special Olympics Maryland. More than 5’000 “plungers” jumped into the freezing cold water of the Chesapeake Bay during the 16th annual MSP Polar Bear Plunge at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis, MD on Saturday, January 28, 2012. This is one of my favorite events to photograph each year. Mainly because of the varied reactions by the participants of the plunge as the step, jump, and fall into the Chesapeake Bay.

Common at the Summer Spirit Festival

common-8851.jpg

The Summer Spirit Festival has turned into an annual event at Merriweather Post Pavilion. The line-up for the 2012 festival was nothing short of impressive. Eric Roberson, Estelle, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Common, & Erykah Badu all put on an incredible sets. This photo is of Common performing over the crowd at the 2012 festival at Merriweather Post Pavilion on Saturday, August 4, 2012 in Columbia, MD.

Hot Chelle Rae

hot-chelle-rae-9131.jpg

Hot Chelle Rae made a tour stop at Rams Head Live on Tuesday, August 15, 2012. This was my first time photographing the band. The were a lot of fun to shoot because they looked like they were having a blast on stage.

Bryen of Mr. Greengenes

mr-greengenes-2713.jpg

Lead singer Bryen performs with the band Mr. Greengenes during Blocktoberfest on Saturday, September 29, 2012 in Baltimore, MD. This seemed to be the start of a run of shows for the band before they call it quits in 2013. This was taken while the band was playing a cover of Nirvana’s “Smell’s Like Teen Spirit”. I felt it fit the song perfectly.

Tyler Young of Arundel High School

arundel-high-school-football-3367.jpg

Arundel High School Wide Receiver Tyler Young catches a pass during a 4A East game against Old Mill High School on Friday, October 5, 2012 in Severn, MD.

This is one of my favorite photos because during that night there seemed to be nothing that Tyler Young could not do. His team defeated Old Mill High School 66-34. However, Young finished the game with 12 catches, 263 yards, and 4 touchdowns. Impressive.

Tay Jardine of the band We Are The In Crowd

we-are-the-in-crowd-6931.jpg

Tay Jardine of the band We Are The In Crowd performs at Rams Head Live on Thursday, November 15, 2012 in Baltimore, MD. Another passionate performer who was fun to shoot because she gave it her all through out the entire set. I love performers who leave it all on the stage.

Michael Bivens of New Edition

new-edition-30th-anniversary-tour-7327.jpg

Michael Bivens of the group New Edition performs during the groups 30th Anniversary Reunion Tour at the 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore, MD on Sunday, May 20, 2012.

It was an honor to have the chance to photograph the group New Edition. It is not everyday that you have the chance to photograph a legendary r&b group. I still cannot figure out if the very excited young woman is taking a picture of herself, or of Michael Bivens. Either way, she made the photo.

Chino Moreno of the Deftones

deftones-4809.jpg

This photo of Chino Moreno of the Deftones performing with his bandmates at Rams Head Live on Friday, October 26, 2012 is from my toughest shoot of the year. This show was fast paced in movement and in lighting. In addition, a fellow photographer put themselves in a place that made it difficult for all photographers to get certain shots. That being said, as a photographer you make the best of all situations and work to get your shots no matter what. I love photography.

Thank you for checking out my Favorite Concert & Event Photos of 2012. I enjoyed putting the collection together for you. Feel free to continue looking down memory lane. You can view and purchase prints from concerts and events that I covered last year by clicking here.

Don’t forget to bookmark the site if you have not already. 2013 is going to be an amazing year.

ABOUT

Ever since I borrowed a camera from a friend of mine eight years ago, I have loved sharing what I see through the lens of my camera with the world. There is nothing better than making somebody feel like they were right there with you. A brief moment in time, by way of photography, can say so much. I hope that these brief moments in time point people in the direction of someplace, something, or someone that they may not be aware of, and that they are curious enough to go see for themselves.
