January 15, 2010 By Anthony Washington

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (domed roof building) located on the campus of The Catholic University of America in  northeast Washington, D.C. photographed from Tenleytown in northwest Washington, D.C. on Thursday, January 14, 2010.

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is the largest Roman Catholic church in the United States.  The Basilica is 459 ft long, 270 ft wide, 237 ft tall. Construction of the Basilica begin in 1920 and opened unfinished in 1959. To this day, the church is still technically under construction.

All though the Basilica does not have its own congregation,  it serves the Catholic University community and holds masses, devotions, concerts, and pilgrimages throughout the year.

Open every day of the year, visitors from around the world (all most one million per year) make their way to the Basilica every day.

ABOUT

Ever since I borrowed a camera from a friend of mine eight years ago, I have loved sharing what I see through the lens of my camera with the world. There is nothing better than making somebody feel like they were right there with you. A brief moment in time, by way of photography, can say so much. I hope that these brief moments in time point people in the direction of someplace, something, or someone that they may not be aware of, and that they are curious enough to go see for themselves.
